My concerns now are directed to clinical and pathological criteria for defining motor neuron disease and primary lateral sclerosis, determining the pathological causes of ALS-dementia, and enhancing palliative care. The clinicopathologic work is largely carried out with Drs. A. P. Hays and Paul Gordon, as well as a medical student, Ms. Beth Hochberg. Palliative care has been enhanced by the studies of Judith Rabkin and Steven M. Albert. Symptomatic or secondary ALS, as in patients with some kinds of cancer, is another concern. Work on PLS entails studies of magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex (Dr. Seth Pullman) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (with Drs. Mitsumoto, Gordon, and Kaufmann). Dr. Hiroshi Mitsumoto is involved as leader in all these studies.
Lewis P. Rowland was Chair of Neurology at Columbia for 25 years (1973-1998) and, earlier, he had been Chair at the University of Pennsylvania (1967-73). He is currently Professor of Neurology. With Dr. Dale Lange, he founded the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Center, which was one of the first multidisciplinary centers in the country. He did undergraduate work, medical school and internship at Yale (1942-1950) and came to Columbia for residency training in Neurology in 1950. He has been here for most of the time since then, except for brief diversions to the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, Montefiore Hospital, and Penn for a total of 10 years. He trained in biochemistry with Professor David Shemin (1957-61) and, with Robert Fishman, led an early NIH-supported Clinical Research Center at the Neurological Institute (1961-7). His research focused on inherited neuromuscular diseases in association with Drs. Audrey S. Penn and Salvatore DiMauro. He has been known for studies of the association of ALS with lymphoproliferative diseases and monoclonal gammopathy, in work with Norman Latov and Michael Shy. He was editor-in-chief of NEUROLOGY (1977-1987) and served on the editorial boards of the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE and THE MEDICAL LETTER. He is currently chief editor of the monthly newspaper, NEUROLOGY TODAY, another publication. He has edited five versions of MERRITT'S NEUROLOGY since 1979 and wrote a history of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, "NINDS AT 50". He is President of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. He was Co-Chair of an NINDS workshop on SMA in 2004.
Honorary degrees from the universities of Marseille and Padova. Honorary member of the neurological associations of England, Canada, Japan, Italy, and Poland. He has been President of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, and the Association of Professors of Neurology. He has given the Wartenberg Lecture at the American Academy of Neurology; the Soriano Lecture of the American Neurological Association, Dean's Distinguished Lecture at Columbia and named lectures at US, European and Asian institutions, many dealing with ALS. He received the Shirley Essey and Forbes Norris Awards for outstanding research in ALS. He was Course Director on Genetics in Neurology (1988-1992) and coursers on ALS (1997-2003). He is a member of the Institute of Medicine.
